Administration:

In order to ensure you get the correct dosage and that the medication enters your ear properly, you should always have someone else administer Acetasol HC for you.

Clean the affected ear so that the medication can enter the ear canal easily. Wash your hands before touching the medication container. If the drops are in a suspension format and not a solution, shake the container for about ten seconds before using.

Tilt the patient’s head so the affected ear is facing up. The Acetasol HC should be dropped directly into the ear canal. The patient’s head should remain titled for several minutes so that the medication is able to run through the entire ear canal. Talk to your doctor about using cotton ear plugs if you feel the medication running out of your ear.

To keep germs out of the medication, always wash your hands before handling the container. Also, avoid touching the applicator to any surface, including the patient’s ear. Do not rinse the applicator after use.

Acetasol HC should be stored at room temperature, away from heat and light. It can be refrigerated, but if so, be sure to warm the container in your hands for a few minutes before use. Avoid freezing.

Missed Dose:

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at once.

Precautions and Side Effects:

If your symptoms do not improve after a few days of treatment, or if they start to get worse, talk to your doctor.

Common side effects that you might experience for a short time after the Acetasol HC is applied to your ear are:  stinging, itching, or a slight burning sensation. Talk to your doctor if these are persistent or if they get worse over time. Serious allergic reactions to Acetasol HC are rare, but if you should develop a rash, swelling, experience severe dizziness or have trouble breathing, seek immediate medical attention.

Discard this medication if the solution turns brown, cloudy, or if it contains particles.

Before using Acetasol HC talk to your doctor if you have a perforated ear drum or if you have certain viral infections such as herpes, simplex, vaccinia, or chickenpox. Tell your doctor about any medical history you have related to your ears such as injuries or surgeries.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss the risks and benefits of Acetasol HC with their doctor before using this medication.
